Everything that surrounds us was imagined and built by someone who wanted to solve a problem. Then the aesthetics were added to this.
— Logan Guinard

Designers use their imagination to create aesthetically pleasing environments, to play with the appearances of things in the physical world and to solve problems that don’t have absolute solutions.

Each outdoor space is created differently in the world, with different styles according to their country, with appropriate materials to accommodate the local climate. But the variety of approaches are all to achieve the same goal of aesthetic beauty. All solutions can be equally beautiful in their own way, giving us a variety of perspectives.

For example, the way that an English garden is structured is to create symmetrical designs, using lush green grass or topiary plants, as opposed to a beach garden or a desert garden in Southern California which might be xeriscaped using many cacti or palm trees.

In both cases the designers take care to draw every line, every curve, to find the right balance, the right position for every element, plants, materials... They are elaborated by specialists who have the same interest but with different approaches to aesthetics (from their environment) and in the end a different result.

That’s why for me there are so many ways to look at and design an outdoor space.

In exteriors that are well designed, I believe it is possible to stimulate the 5 senses of the body:

- Sight: With the different shapes and curves

- Sound: With runoff waters from fountains and pools

- Smell: With the plants surrounding the backyard

- Touch: With the different type of materials we use

- Taste: While enjoying your exterior, by eating and drinking with friends and family.

This is crucial for individuals to enjoy and create memories, especially today as they tend to appreciate better things and like extreme comfort. Nowadays, there are more possibilities to find inspiration around us but it still gets challenging when approaching the conception of a project. I find most of my inspirations in magazines, books, the internet, and people that I meet because they teach me different points of view.

Designers’ study aesthetics and improve their sense of it over time. They get their inspiration from their daily life and play with their creativity to make those landscapes evoke in people a unique and emotional reaction to the outdoor space.

Designers strive to have a meeting of the mind with their clients, to be in sync with their moods, connect with their vision. The goal is to take their personality and manifest it in the physical project. It can be achieved with color, pattern, layout, or special features that speak to their temperament or frame of mind. The best designs reflect the client’s personality and emotional vibe.

To me, I compare a real designer with an artist.
